Ashish Kumar June 19, 2014

The social networking giant seems to be in a shutdown condition on June 19, 2014. Yes, today Facebook was down. They claim this unreachability issue to be the worst outage in the last four years.

Facebook goes down worldwide

The networking site comes up with an apology message on their URL. They take this shutdown as a big lesson learnt, and claim that they will provide their users with the maximum technical details about this whole issue.

They currently see the flaw as the inappropriate handling of an error condition. The fix for the issue involved making a query to a group of databases. Making a query to this cluster resulted in a loop that did not allow the database to recover.

To fix the issue, Facebook had to stop all the database traffic, which simply meant turning the site off. As soon as the databases recovered, Facebook can allow its users to be back to the site. Facebook seems to be exploring new ways to fix the root cause, and let us just wait and watch how quick and gracefully can it handle with this dilemma.

FB seems to be apologetic, and we as users should be optimistic, as this is definitely not the end of world. Facebook has always taken its performance and reliability constraints quite seriously. Let us see how the social networking pioneer emerges out of this tight spot.
