Kick Off Your Niagara Party with Axe Throwing

lenardjohnson October 25, 2016

Many people come to Niagara Falls with one simple plan: party all night and recover at AIMac’s Buffet in the morning, whether it’s for a bachelor or bachelorette party, a big birthday, or just to get away for an amazing weekend. If you’re coming in October, it may be because you know your crew brings the party with you wherever you go, and you don’t want to have to wait in line for it. That way, you can get in everything – or maybe your crew isn’t exactly the type that likes to hear the words “dress code in effect.”

Whatever the case may be, Niagara Falls has one more new attraction that partygoers should make a point not miss, and it’s called axe throwing parties. The dress code averse don’t need to panic; while you’re going to see plenty of red flannel shirts, the only thing that’s mandatory is closed-toe shoes. Starting in October, you will be able to book online your axe throwing party in Niagara at one of the leagues spreading from city to city across Canada.

The popularity of the game has been making headlines both in Canada and in the United States because of the speed at which it has suddenly appeared from one coast to another, but also because of the unique edge to the game. No doubt some of the media attention has to do with the shock value, especially considering many axe throwing venues are also licensed, but the safety record of longer-running leagues like the Backyard Axe Throwing League (BATL) are impressively clean. That’s because they have expert coaches begin each 3-hour event with 45 minutes on the basics of axe throwing, from safety to precisely hitting the target. It’s a sport that’s based more on precision and focus than on strength or athleticism, so it’s accessible to people of many different abilities.

Axe throwing parties at leagues like BATL are typically designed for groups of 6 or more and after 45-minute coaching sessions, participants go head-to-head with every one else in their group in a round robin tournament. That means you all get to test your aim against each other, not to mention generate some rivalries in time for the elimination rounds. The target is like darts simplified: one bullseye worth 7 points and two concentric circles around it, worth 3 and 1 point each. In these one-on-one faceoffs, participants each have 5 throws to score the most points possible, and on their fifth and final throw, they have the option of going for the clutch: a 7-point green dot off in the corner.

Of course, there are plenty of world class nightclubs in Niagara Falls and the area to hit once your party has hit its stride and crowned its champion, and with evening games you will have plenty of time to make the very most of the night. Axe throwing is a great way to build up an appetite, whether it’s for a 12 oz. steak or having a blast on the dance floor, making it a stellar appetizer to all that the Niagara Falls nightlife can offer you.
