Nicola Williams September 16, 2014

jobPlanning ahead — whether for an interview or first day at the office — will give you a better chance of success. Preparing to change one’s job entails the following:-

1. Things to think through before saying “I quit”

When you are not happy at work, it can be tempting to turn your back on your employer, but there are some significant factors to consider before taking this last step:

i. Make sure you have lined up something else, otherwise it can really reflect badly on you when looking a next job

ii. Prepare a list of your likes and dislikes about your present job. Then ask yourself these questions are things indeed that bad or do the good things offset the bad?

iii. If you are really unhappy, then try talking to your supervisor before handing in your resignation letter

iv. If you are certain that you want to move on, then follow the correct procedure and be sure to remain professional: references are valuable for future employment

2. Choosing your next job

-If you are not sure what it is you want to do as career, a good starting idea is to make a list of your strengths and flaws, then consider which specific roles favor your strengths. If there are particular companies you would consider working for, carry out adequate research by reading trade press, visiting websites and connecting with them using social media.

-You also need to consider what is essential to you in a job, such as pay, location, flexibility and growth opportunities. This helps in refining your career path.

3. Plan your first day at work

-While you cannot certainly control what happens on your first day at work, you can control your approach to it.

-Making a decent impression at this stage is vital, so follow these guidelines for a drama free first day:-

i. Your first day may include lots of form filling, so find out what you may require and carry it with you

ii. Make sure to know the contact person when you get there

iii. Try to have a decent night’s sleep before your first day

iv. Find out whether there is anywhere to order lunch from in the area. If not, ensure that you take something with you.

You need to keep you energy level optimal on your first day.

v. Whether it is uniform, smart/casual or business outfit, ensure that you know the dress code well prior to your first day at work

4. Planning your next move

If you have decided that it is time to move on to greener pastures, a small per-planning is necessary. After all, you need understand what you want to attain from your next move, otherwise you are not going to get far. Consider:-

i. What you are seeking from your next role

ii. What is key to you (flexibility, salary, location?)

iii. What you like about your current role (varied workload, customer contact)

iv. What you would like to amend (less admin, manageable hour)

v. What motivates you (team activities, incentives, long-term objectives)

vi. What is a ‘nice to have’ and what is a ‘must have’ (increased holiday entitlement vs. more responsibility)

5. Moving up the corporate ranking

If you want to be perceived as a solemn candidate for a promotion, you need to get seen for the right reasons:-

i. Reveal yourself as a professional in your dressing, act and speak

ii. Be eager to go an extra mile to get a job done

iii. Try to keep sickness absenteeism to a minimum

iv. Offer to take extra responsibilities in a range of areas, and do not complain if you are given something that is out of your usual comfort zone
