Sukkot: What Do You Need To Know About The Jewish Celebration?

It’s an agricultural event that began as a way of offering appreciation for the fruits and vegetables that had been harvested. Sukkot remembers the Jew’s 40-year perilous journey following their departure from Egypt.

Sukkah is a makeshift dwelling, serving as a reminder of the sufferings of the time. It also symbolizes the fragility of all existence; thus Sukkot is a time to appreciate our houses and the refuge that our bodies provide.

Sukkot remembers the years the Jews spent wandering in the desert on their trek to the Promised Land, and it honors God’s protection of them during those trying times. Sukkot is also identified as the Tent Festival or the Booth Celebration.

What is Sukkah?

A sukkah is a structure with an organic material cover, according to Halakha. Three walls create a sukkah. It measures three to four feet in length. Sukkahs are constructed in such a way that the entire or a portion of their rooftop is open to the sky. It should have a minimum floor area of 16 square feet.

Sukkot is a Jewish celebration that helps them feel unique. Sukkot begins with the construction of a sukkah. Jews begin building their sukkah after Yom Kippur. After constructing the sukkah, the most crucial step is the sukkah decoration. A sukkah is a holy place that has been ornamented with great ingenuity since its inception. This celebration can last anywhere from 5 to 8 days. It is seven days in Israel.

Food must be consumed in the Sukkah, which is why there is so much of it. Traditional Jewish meals such as challan, chicken soup, kreplach, and kugel can be offered during Sukkot. For the period of the holiday, Jews say their prayers and sleep in sukkahs. In the Sukkah, most sorts of work are forbidden. The rabbis agreed that during the holiday, the Arbat Haminim should be put together and waved. Arbat ha minim plants come in four different varieties. The following plants are mentioned in the Bible:

  • Etrog- (lime fruit)
  • Lulav– (palm leaves)
  • Hadas– (myrtle tree leaves)
  • Arva– (willow tree leaves)

These plants were waved in temples in ancient times.

The Sukkot festival has a tradition of decorating the sukkah. People use their creativity to adorn the Sukkah murals and make them appealing. Sukkahs have shiny decorations, pictures on the walls, dried or artificial fruits, and grains hung on the walls. Which mainly includes seven species such as:

  • Wheat
  • Barley
  • Grapes
  • Figs
  • Pomegranates
  • Olives
  • Dates

These are popular sukkah decorations that Israel is known for. White sheets are hung by certain families to remember the “clouds of glory.” Various banners and waterproof materials are also used to decorate the Sukkah mural.
