Sukkot remembers the years the Jews spent wandering in the desert on their trek to the Promised Land, and it honors God’s protection of them during those trying times. Sukkot is also identified as the Tent Festival or the Booth Celebration.

What is Sukkah?

A sukkah is a structure with an organic material cover, according to Halakha. Three walls create a sukkah. It measures three to four feet in length. Sukkahs are constructed in such a way that the entire or a portion of their rooftop is open to the sky. It should have a minimum floor area of 16 square feet.

The following plants are mentioned in the Bible:

  • Etrog- (lime fruit)
  • Lulav– (palm leaves)
  • Hadas– (myrtle tree leaves)
  • Arva– (willow tree leaves)

These plants were waved in temples in ancient times.

  • Figs
  • Pomegranates
