What is Driving the Sustainable Shopping Trend?

dsmith June 1, 2021

According to a survey by McKinsey, over 60% of consumers consider sustainability an important factor when they shop. Of those, 60% of respondents consider a company promoting sustainability important. Consumers aren’t just looking for sustainable products, but they want products to be marketed that way.

Sustainability has not always been a concern. The term and concept date back to the late 80s. Even then, it was not a concept that was embraced by many consumers. When people first heard about sustainability, they did not have many shopping choices and were not able to shop for sustainable goods. You never saw sustainable fashion brands promoting sustainable dresses; these days, it’s much more common.

You may wonder what is causing this trend. It is not so much a trend, but a lifestyle. A trend comes and goes quickly; this movement shows no signs of slowing down or going away. Consumers know more about the Earth; they understand that Earth’s resources are not unlimited. People are concerned about the planet that they leave behind for the future generations. Consumers know that going on the way they have been can only cause harm to the planet and the people.

Consumers have become less self-centered over the years. It’s no longer about a person’s individual wants and needs; it’s more about what is better for all. The world feels like a smaller place, and people feel connected in a way that they may not have before. As connections form, consumers become concerned about what is going on with the other side of the world, not just their own neighborhood. Consumers are no longer content to sit by and have a glass of clean water when they know that someone on the other side of the world can’t have a clean glass of water due to pollution from the company that made the jeans they wear.

As consumers’ views changed, smart business owners took note. Companies began working to make their plants safer, healthier, and more environmentally friendly. Business owners stopped buying supplies and materials from companies that were not offering them sustainable products. Clothing designers started creating sustainable, well-made, fashionable outfits. Chefs started shopping locally for sustainable, in-season foods rather than bringing supplies in on big trucks from around the country. Everywhere you looked, people were demanding that companies do better, and companies were listening.

These days, it’s much easier to find sustainable products than it was in the 1980s. Consumers who want to shop ethically now have options, and they are taking advantage of them. Ethical shopping is wonderful for the planet and for the consumer. Business owners are also benefiting by giving consumers what they want.

Join the many others who are showing their concern for the world by shopping ethically. You can find a beautiful, sustainable, affordable wardrobe, sustainable jewelry that sparkles and shines so much more. Start filling your life with items you can feel good about buying.
