Do you love hiking? Hiking is one of the best workouts. It’s a great way to improve your overall health, and fitness and reduce stress. But that’s not all. Hiking can build strength, burn calories, and make you happier.

But just going hiking without being prepared is not an option. There are some essentials that every hiker should have with them when going into the backcountry or mountains.

If you’re a hiker or trying to be one, this list of must-have hiking essentials will come in handy. Let’s see, what are the items you absolutely need next time you go hiking?

Navigation

The first and foremost hiking gear you should always have with you is some sort of navigation tool. Whether that’s a map, compass, GPS device, or personal locator beacon (PLB) it’s up to you.

A topographic map is something you can always have with you. Of course, make sure the map is recent and that it has all the trails you might want to explore.

When it comes to a compass, we all have one on our smartphones. However, having a standard compass is a smart idea because you won’t need to rely on your smartphone battery to keep you on track.

GPS devices are digital maps that can pinpoint your exact location. There are devices designed especially for outdoor activities and they are waterproof. You can download a GPS app on your smartphone but once again, you’d need to rely on battery.

A PLB is a little gadget handy for emergencies. With this gadget, you can alert the emergency personnel and they will find your location with the help of the beacon.

First-aid kit

Since we’re discussing emergencies, a first-aid kit is a must-have for every hiking trip, no matter how long or short. It’s vital to have the kit because you never know when you might need it.

Usually, people take pre-assembled first-aid kits with them, but you can customize your own to fit your personal needs. A first-aid kit should consist of bandages in various sizes, gauze pads, scissors, disinfectant, and pain medication. However, you can add other items as well. This will mostly depend on the length of your hike.

Hiking footwear

Appropriate hiking footwear can make all the difference when going hiking. If you want to avoid blisters and enjoy your hiking trip, make sure you wear hiking footwear.

For smooth trails, hiking sneakers or trail running shoes will be more than enough. But when you’re going on rocky, rugged trails, make sure you have heavy-duty hiking boots.

Water

Having enough water on a hike is vital. Depending on the length and intensity of the hike, you should take enough water. Before starting the hike, make sure you’re hydrated. Pre-hydration is important.

During the hike, try to drink around 32 ounces every two miles. Even when you don’t feel thirsty, try to drink smaller sips.

When it comes to other beverages, stay away from alcohol and sugary sodas. You can drink organic caffeine and tea. These beverages are plant-based energy drinks. To keep these drinks either warm or cool during the hike, you can use insulated custom stubby holders.

Food

Just like water, food is also important on hiking trips. When hiking, you should take enough snacks with you. For day hikes, you can take one or two energy or granola bars. Have a meal before the hike and take a snack once every hour or two during the hike.

For longer hikes, you’ll need to double the amount of calorie-dense foods. Some snack ideas include peanut butter sandwiches, nuts and seeds, fresh or dried fruit, granola, energy bars, and so on.

Appropriate clothing

When it comes to hiking clothing, the smartest thing would be to check the weather forecast. The weather will dictate the clothing you wear during your hiking trip.

For sunny, warm days your clothing should keep you cool and protect you from the harmful sun rays.

If there are chances of the weather changing, pack an extra layer. Make sure you wear moisture-wicking underwear, t-shirts, quick-drying pants, long-sleeved t-shirt, lightweight jackets, and socks. For colder weather, long underwear, a hat, and a pair of gloves.

Knife

Every experienced hiker knows that bringing a knife on a hike is crucial. Having a knife with you on a hike can help you in emergencies, gear repair, first-aid, food prep, and so much more.

As far as the type of knife you need, there are many different types of survival knives you can choose from. Plus, you can also use a multi-tool.

Sun protection

In addition to clothing that will protect you from the sun, you should also pack a pair of sunglasses and sunscreen.

Sunglasses will protect your eyes from both the sun and snow. High-quality sunglasses usually feature UVA and UVB protection, so investing in a pair may be a good idea.

Applying sunscreen can also be a good idea. Choose a formula with high SPF, this way you’ll be sure that your skin is protected.

Conclusion

All these hiking essentials are necessary for a safe and successful hike. If you want to have a fun time and enjoy your time hiking, make sure you’re prepared.

Whether you’re going on a long hike or a day hike, this list will come in handy.
