Clever Closet Alternatives: Clothing Storage Ideas for No-Closet Spaces

erinlane9104 November 14, 2023

When storage space is limited or scarce, you have to be creative. We all wish to have large closets that can fit all our clothes, but the reality is that some of us live in small apartments or old homes that need more storage or closet space.

If you’re one of those people, we understand your struggle. However, there are solutions even for no-closet spaces.

No closet, no problem because we have different and fun ways to store your clothing without a closet.

Make the most out of under-bed storage

Most of us need to remember that we have a lot of unused space under our beds. This space can be perfect for storing off-season clothing. Simply invest in some clothing bags or plastic storage boxes with lids. Try not to store the clothing in cardboard boxes. These boxes can, over time, transfer the smell of cardboard and glue to our clothing, a smell that is difficult to get rid of.

It’s important that you find storage bags or boxes that can be closed so that your clothes are protected. Before storing them away, wash or dry-clean your off-season garments, and fold them neatly in the storage options. To ensure that moths don’t get to your clothes, put in the boxes some cedar wood rings or some dry lavender bags.

Then slide the boxes or bags under the bed, and that’s it – off-season clothes stored away.

Bring in a dresser

In a space without a closet, you need to think of other storage options. One such option is a dresser. Dressers are a great option for clothes that aren’t bulky and that can be easily folded.

Dressers come in many different sizes, so you won’t have a problem choosing something that fits your home. Having a dresser will help you avoid a lot of clutter. For example, dressers are ideal for undergarments, socks, pajamas, jeans, sweatpants or leggings, and t-shirts. Once you have those clothes folded and out of the way, it will be easier to deal with the rest of your clothes.

Make room for an armoire or wardrobe

A wardrobe or an armoire can be a great substitution for a closet. Of course, if you have enough space in your bedroom.

Wardrobes or armoires also come in various sizes and styles, so you’re bound to find something you like that fits your space.

The great thing about these pieces of furniture is that they are tall and have doors, which means you can fit a lot of clothing in there and keep them hidden.

Most wardrobes feature a hanging rod, a couple of shelves, and even some drawers. It all depends on the style and size you choose.

Another pretty cool thing about wardrobes is that you can easily paint them or add mirrors so that they match your décor.

Buy or DIY some clothing racks

Wardrobes can be bulky, and if you don’t have enough space to fit them, you need to look for other solutions. A clothing rack is a pretty good solution for homes with limited space and storage.

A clothes rack can be used anywhere – in your bedroom, your living room, or your hallway. You can choose any style you like, from metal clothes racks, wooden clothes racks, and clothes racks with thick rails, to clothes racks with shelves.

Arrange the clothes on your rack any way you like. For example, some people love clothes racks because they see them as décor pieces that display all their best outfits.

You can arrange your clothing as you would in a clothing shop or you can display clothing that you plan to wear the next day.

Bookshelves and storage baskets

If you’re not a fan of clothes racks, don’t worry because we have other ideas for you. Think about getting a regular, inexpensive bookshelf and some storage baskets.

You can store your clothing in these storage boxes and then display them on the bookshelf. Ultimately, you don’t even have to use the baskets, simply fold the clothing pieces and put them on the shelves.

The other option features a bookshelf and a hanging bar. Instead of shelves, you can install a bar and have space for your hanging clothes.

If you want to hide the clothing, you can install a curtain over the shelves and no one would be the wiser.

Hang wall hooks

If you have a lot of unused vertical space in your home, you can hang different types of hooks and turn your walls into closets.

Coat hooks, for example, are perfect for storing belts, and scarves. You can even hang your shirts and pants. Simply put your garments on the hangers and hang them on the hooks.

Valet hooks or rods are also a great idea for hanging clothing pieces. If you want to be creative, you can turn the shelf brackets upside down and use them as wall hooks.

When it comes to wall hooks, you have many options, just choose one that fits your style.

Install hanging rods

If you need a solution for hanging clothes, a hanging rod is a perfect option for you. You can hang a rod or several from your ceiling or you can attach it to the wall. Doing this will allow you to create a designated closet area. Once again, you can hide your hanging rods with curtains.

Turn a coat rack into your closet

Who says that free-standing coat racks with shoe storage are strictly meant for hallways? If you don’t have a closet in your home, you can turn a coat rack into a closet.

The hooks can be the perfect place to hang your hanging clothes and a shoe rack can be turned into space for folded clothing. Additionally, you can add storage boxes to store away socks and undergarments.

Turn a corner or a wall into a built-in closet

A blank wall or an unused corner in your home can be a perfect spot for a wall closet system. If you lack storage space in your home, installing these systems can be a life changer.

Open closets are very popular right now, so a stylish wall closest system might just be what your home needs.

You can buy a pre-made system or you can have one custom-made for your space. Just remember that custom systems are going to be slightly more expensive than pre-made ones.

Also, since this is an open-concept wall system, keep in mind that you’ll need to keep everything tidy and organized all the time.

Bottom line

Just because your home doesn’t have a closet, it doesn’t mean that you can’t create one. Our homes are all different and unique, and sometimes you’ll need to think out of the box and be creative with storage options. Hopefully, some of these ideas can help you out or give you an idea for your space.
